. . . Afterthoughts: Teaching Writing in Schools K- college

If you had $25 million dollars . . .

how would you improve writing instruction in K-12 schools?

1) Set up a commission for five years to make a needs assessment for writing in the marketplace and government.

# 1. Professional development treats teachers/faculty members as the professionals they are

# 2. Professional development relies on a rich mix of resources, including a theoretical and philosophical base; a

research base; and illustrations of good practices.

2) Hire a successful consultant to introduce a teaching methodology to 200 secondary schools over five years.

# 3. Professional development supports teachers/faculty at all levels of expertise; its value is confirmed by external

validation.

# 6. The best models of professional development—best in the sense of enhancing first, teacher practice leading to

second, student learning—are characterized by sustained activities, by engagement with administrators, and by

community-based learning.

# 7. Professional development is systematically reviewed with evidence of efficacy provided by a review process

including multiple stakeholders and NCTE’s own research.

3) Give 100 high schools grants to improve writing over a five-year period.

4) Subsidize tuition and leadership in 200 summer institutes for one year where teachers share successful methods in the teaching of writing and deploy these teachers as professional developers and teacher researchers in K-12 schools.

5) You have a better idea?

Common Core State Standards

Writing
· The ability to write logical arguments based on substantive claims, sound reasoning,
and relevant evidence is a cornerstone of the writing standards,
with opinion writing—a basic form argument —extending down into the earliest grades.

· Research—both short, focused projects (such as those commonly required in the workplace)
and longer term in depth research —is emphasized throughout the standards
but most prominently in the writing strand since a written analysis
and presentation of findings is so often critical.

· Annotated samples of student writing accompany
the standards and help establish adequate performance levels in writing
arguments, informational / explanatory texts, and narratives in the various grades.
